Exhibition
Surrealism
and Madness
26. November 2009 -14. February
2010
Vernissage: 25.November 2009, 7 pm
Max Ernst was so fascinated
by Hans Prinzhorn’s “Artistry of the Mentally Ill”
that he took the book, only published that year, with him to Paris,
where it caused a sensation among his fellow artists, and became
as it were the (Picture-) Bible of the Surrealists. Through pictures,
drawings, graphic art and text, the exhibition clarifies the attraction
the ‘aesthetics of insanity’ had for artists like Max
Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Andre Masson and Hans Bellmer. On one
hand, analogies between the practice of the Surrealists and the
literary and visual production of institution inmates (dessin automatique,
paranoiac-critical method etc.) are shown and discussed.
On the other hand, the exhibition of psychically
ill artists at the Galerie Bine in Paris in 1929, which was taken
up by the Surrealists with great interest, is partially reconstructed.
An inventory of the exhibits sent from Heidelberg at that time has
been kept at the Prinzhorn Collection. Thus it is possible to show
which works the Surrealists had seen in the original as well as
the works published in ‘Artistry of the Mentally Ill’.
Additionally, we present some other items that were certainly in
the 1929 exhibition, mostly from the Marie collection.
Finally, ‘Surrealism and Madness’
addresses the ‘real’ experience of insanity among the
Surrealists with one example, and looks at the continuation of the
subject after 1945, specifically the role of the Saint Anne Hospital,
Paris. A cabinet of the exhibition is dedicated to the development
of Unica Zürn, who from the early 1960s was in psychiatric
care over and over again. She committed suicide in 1970.

David Maclagan 'Surrealism, Art Brut,
Outsider Art: a disputed succession?'
Contrary to appearances, the lineage connecting these three perspectives
on art and madness is not a continuous one: definitions of 'madness',
motives for re-evaluating 'psychotic art' and the imagined links
between creativity and mental disturbance, for example, are all
driven by polemic and subject to fluctuation. I shall examine some
of these shifts in the images of art and madness and show how they
affect the status of art-works themselves, as well as of those who
create them.

The Air Loom and other dangerous influencing
machines
-
Prinzhorn Collection, 26.10.2006
- 15.4.2007

What are these machines that people feel delivered to? And why
should we be interested in them today? This is the first time
that these fictitious "influencing machines" hold centre stage
at an exhibition. An exhibit that virtually bursts the boundaries
of the gallery is the seven-meter high "Air Loom" made by the
British artist Rod Dickinson (2002). He constructed the machine
after drawings made by an inmate of the Bethlam asylum in London,
James Tilly Matthews (c. 1770–1815), who believed himself tormented
by this fictitious monster. The artistic allusion to our time
is made not only by Rod Dickinson but also by Zoe Beloff (New
York) with her interactive installation, "The influencing machine
of Natalija A." (2001). Delusional machines are constructed from
feelings of helplessness. In former times, the devil was made
responsible. After the Enlightenment, distress and fear were produced
by the newly developed, mysterious technologies - the telegraph,
X-ray and radio equipment - especially around 1900. Jakob Mohr,
Hugo Rennert, L. Heintzen and Friedrich Fent - artists of the
Prinzhorn Collection - felt they were being bombarded by light
waves emitted by X-ray machines.

Outsider Art Market
-
Prinzhorn Collection, 27.4.
- 29.4.2007, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

It
is still not easy for art by people with psychiatric experience
and other outsiders of society which differs in form and content
from established contemporary art. There are only a few exhibition
spaces and galleries specialised in this kind of work or integrate
it into their programs. For this reason the Prinzhorn Collection
is organising for the first time a selling exhibition of works
by selected artists from the field of outsider art. Here you can
make discoveries and perhaps even start collecting.

Wölfli, Grieshaber, Lohse-Wächtler,
Bender - The Collection Grows
- Prinzhorn Collection, 24.5. - 9.9.2007

The name Prinzhorn usually stands for the eminent fund of asylum art
which the scholar brought together at the beginning of the 1920s.
But again and again the collection increased, especially since the
1990s, when it had become famous through travelling exhibitions in
Germany and abroad, and after the opening of the museum in 2001. There
is however little money for purchases. The most important new entrants
are generous gifts and permanent loans. These include treasures like
two large black and white drawings by Adolf Wölfli, the legendary
"State Album" (1872-76) of Emma Mohr and works by Elfriede
Lohse-Wächtler. Piled up alongside the justly excessive "World
Rescue Project" of Vanda Vieira-Schmidt consisting of more than
500 000 drawings, are the obsessive accumulations of Friedrich Boss
and Harald Bender. There are many still unknown works to be discovered.
